It frequently troubles me to find out that there are folks using sleep prescription drugs for getting baby to sleep. I'm not only concerned about the baby but I'm also concerned about the parent's welfare. We know sleep medication can be dangerous for infants and young children and may not even be effective.

Getting baby to sleep is important when the whole family's tired and so a number of parents turn to sleeping pills as a last desperate alternative. But your baby could be in for a lifetime of sleeping pill addiction. As an adult he would probably always be stuck with a weak sleep routine.

There has been no testing on the results of sleeping pills on babies. In the case of some over-the-counter medications containing histamines (Nytol or Sominex) the effects can be reversed and they can act as a stimulant. As you may imagine, getting baby to sleep using these medications is next to impossible.

I'm not trying to criticize these poor parents as they've probably tried everything else and failed. Every parent with a restless baby is continuously searching for ways to help that baby sleep. They will devote any amount of money to just find out one key thing - getting baby to sleep.

Parents have the following three problems:

Baby sleeps all day but remains awake all night.

Baby goes to sleep quickly but wakes up numerous times a night.

Their baby gets angry and upset at bedtimes and won't settle.

Full time mums can usually cope ok as they can catch up with some rest at some stage in the day. However for those with full time jobs, daily life can be very grim indeed.

Now if you're one of these parents, then don't throw in the towel because there is a better approach and it won't be as complicated as you imagine.

Here's some baby sleep tips that actually work...

Crying it out - Now this won't appeal to the tender hearted parent! It involves leaving your baby to cry for a set amount of time before going to attend to him. As time goes on, little by little increase the time period between visits. Tough love indeed, but it does work! Eventually baby will realize that his crying isn't achieving anything so he gives up and falls asleep.

Now I recognize the above is probably not everyone's cup of tea. But in the long run you will be giving your baby the gift of being able to put himself to sleep.

Set up a sleep schedule - It doesn't have to be complicated. A bath accompanied by a cuddle and a short bedtime story will do wonders. You should not include stimulating activities such as games into the routine and do everything in the same order at the same time of night.

Natural and organic remedies - If you're a busy mom or dad this can be the best option. These types of remedies are a much healthier and safer option to sleeping pills for getting baby to sleep.
